Description
Xylocaine 2% (lidocaine hydrochloride) is a local anesthetic solution designed for infiltration, nerve block, and other regional anesthesia techniques. It is commonly used to provide rapid and temporary pain relief during surgical procedures, dental interventions, and minor invasive treatments. The solution is formulated as a 2% concentration, with 20 mg of lidocaine per milliliter, and is supplied in a 10 mL multi-dose vial for convenient use in clinical settings.
The mechanism of action of lidocaine involves reversible inhibition of sodium ion channels in neuronal cell membranes. By blocking sodium influx, it prevents the generation and transmission of nerve impulses, thereby inducing local anesthesia in the targeted area. This effect is both rapid and temporary, typically beginning within minutes of administration and lasting for one to two hours, depending on the site and dosage.
Xylocaine 2% is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to local anesthetics of the amide type or any components of the solution. Adverse reactions may include localized swelling, redness, or, in rare cases, systemic effects such as dizziness, hypotension, or central nervous system symptoms.
