Description

Valacyclovir 1 g tablets are an antiviral medication used for the treatment and suppression of herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infections. It is a prodrug of acyclovir, which is rapidly converted into its active form after oral administration. This mechanism allows for enhanced bioavailability and increased efficacy compared to acyclovir. The drug works by inhibiting viral DNA polymerase, preventing viral replication and reducing the severity and duration of outbreaks.

The primary indications for valacyclovir include the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles), genital herpes, and cold sores. It is also prescribed as suppressive therapy to reduce the frequency of recurrent outbreaks and to lower the risk of transmission of genital herpes. In immunocompromised patients, valacyclovir helps manage cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections and other herpesvirus-related complications.

Common side effects include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, and fatigue. In rare cases, it may cause renal impairment, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), or central nervous system effects, particularly in elderly or immunosuppressed individuals. Adequate hydration is recommended to minimize the risk of renal complications.
