Description
Tamoxifen 20 mg is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) primarily used in the treatment of estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer. It is effective in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women, reducing the risk of cancer recurrence and progression.Tamoxifen is prescribed for risk reduction in women at high risk of developing breast cancer, including those with a family history or genetic predisposition.
The drug functions by binding to estrogen receptors, thereby inhibiting estrogen-mediated cell proliferation in breast tissue. However, tamoxifen exhibits partial estrogen agonist activity in other tissues, such as the endometrium. This may increase the risk of uterine malignancies, including endometrial cancer.
Tamoxifen is associated with an elevated risk of thromboembolic events, including deep vein thrombosis, stroke, and pulmonary embolism. Caution is advised in patients with a history of thromboembolic disorders. It may also cause male infertility and gynecomastia in men receiving the drug for off-label uses.
