Spironolactone 100 mg is a potassium-sparing diuretic used in the treatment of heart failure, hypertension, and edema. It works by blocking aldosterone receptors, which helps reduce fluid retention, lower blood pressure, and decrease the strain on the heart. The drug also promotes the excretion of sodium while retaining potassium, making it effective in managing fluid balance.

Common side effects include hyperkalemia (elevated potassium levels), gynecomastia (breast tissue enlargement in men), and menstrual irregularities. Patients using spironolactone should be monitored regularly for changes in potassium levels and renal function, as the medication can increase the risk of hyperkalemia, especially when used in combination with ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), or potassium supplements.
