Mupirocin is a translucent, white and water-soluble ointment formulated along with polyethylene glycol base. Each gram of ointment contains 20 mg of mupirocin i.e., 2% w/w that is packed as 22gm. Other ingredients include macrogol. Mupirocin ointment is produced via fermentation of pseudomonas fluorescens. The antibiotic inhibits isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase, thereby arresting protein synthesis of the bacteria. Mupirocin ointment 2% is indicated both in children and adults as a topical antibacterial agent against majority skin infections that includes streptococci, staphylococci and streptococcus aureus including methicillin resistant strains.
Mupirocin ointment is also active against gram negative organisms such as Haemophilus influenzae and Escherichia coli. Moreover, it is also effective against other skin infections such as furunculosis, impetigo, and folliculitis. It is recommended to apply ointment on the affected area three times a day for about 10 days. Avoid mixing the ointment with other preparations to prevent loss of antibacterial action. Mupirocin ointment has a shelf life of two years. It must be used within 6 months of opening.
