Description
Hep-Lock Flush MDV 100 U 30 mL is a sterile heparin sodium solution used as a flush to maintain the patency of intravenous lines and catheters. It is commonly employed in clinical settings to prevent blood clotting within central venous catheters, arterial lines, and hemodialysis shunts. The solution is specifically designed to reduce the risk of thrombus formation.
The primary mechanism of action of heparin is the inhibition of thrombin and factor Xa, which are essential components in the blood clotting cascade. By binding to antithrombin III, heparin accelerates its ability to inhibit these coagulation factors, thereby preventing the formation of fibrin clots.
Common side effects of heparin flush include localized irritation at the injection site, bleeding, and allergic reactions. Monitoring is required, especially in patients with a history of bleeding disorders or those receiving other anticoagulant therapies. Although used for flushing purposes, Hep-Lock is not suitable for systemic anticoagulation.
