Description
Diprivan (propofol) 500 mg/50 mL is an intravenous anesthetic used for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia, as well as for sedation in mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care units (ICU). This formulation is provided in a 20-bottle box, each containing 50 mL of solution, with a concentration of 10 mg/mL.
The mechanism of action of Diprivan involves potentiation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptors in the central nervous system. This enhances inhibitory neurotransmission, leading to a sedative and anesthetic effect. Propofol's ability to induce and maintain anesthesia is highly dependent on the dose and patient factors, such as age and underlying health conditions.
Diprivan is primarily used in hospital settings under the supervision of trained healthcare professionals. It is administered intravenously and can be titrated to achieve the desired level of sedation or anesthesia. The drug is stored at room temperature and should be used within six hours of opening to prevent bacterial contamination.
