Description
Proparacaine HCl 0.5% Ophthalmic Solution is a topical anesthetic agent used in ophthalmic procedures requiring surface anesthesia. It is formulated as a sterile solution for external ocular use and is primarily indicated for diagnostic procedures such as tonometry, gonioscopy, removal of foreign bodies, and short ophthalmic surgical interventions. The active component, proparacaine hydrochloride, belongs to the ester group of local anesthetics.
The mechanism of action involves the reversible blockade of sodium ion influx in neuronal membranes, which prevents the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses. Onset of anesthesia typically occurs within 20 seconds after instillation, with a duration of approximately 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the procedure and individual response.
Proparacaine HCl 0.5% should be administered only by trained healthcare professionals. Prolonged use or frequent administration can result in epithelial toxicity, delayed wound healing, and potential damage to ocular tissues. Common adverse effects include transient stinging, burning, conjunctival redness, and, rarely, corneal clouding or epithelial damage.
