Description
Cephalexin 250 mg Cap 100 is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria. Cephalexin is commonly prescribed for respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone infections, otitis media, and urinary tract infections.
The mechanism of action of cephalexin involves inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for peptidoglycan cross-linking. By disrupting the structural integrity of the bacterial cell wall, cephalexin leads to cell lysis and death, making it bactericidal in nature. Its spectrum of activity is particularly effective against Streptococcus species, Staphylococcus aureus (excluding MRSA), and some gram-negative organisms like E. coli and Klebsiella species.
Common side effects of cephalexin include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Allergic reactions, including rash, pruritus, or, rarely, anaphylaxis, may occur. Patients with a history of penicillin allergy should use cephalexin cautiously, as cross-reactivity may occur.
