Description
Bleomycin Sulfate 15 Unit Vial 10 mL is an antineoplastic agent used in the treatment of various cancers, including Hodgkin’s lymphoma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, testicular cancer, and certain squamous cell carcinomas. This medication is a cytotoxic glycopeptide that disrupts cancer cell proliferation by inducing breaks in DNA strands. The preparation is suitable for intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, or intrapleural administration.
The mechanism of action involves the generation of reactive oxygen species, which cause DNA damage and ultimately lead to apoptosis in rapidly dividing tumor cells. Bleomycin is typically used as part of combination chemotherapy regimens to maximize efficacy and improve treatment outcomes.
Common side effects of bleomycin include fever, chills, nausea, and fatigue. Serious adverse effects may include pulmonary toxicity, which presents as pneumonitis and can progress to fibrosis. Patients receiving bleomycin require close monitoring of pulmonary function, as well as renal and hepatic function, to minimize the risk of toxicity.
