It is used for the dilution or dissolution of drugs requiring an aqueous vehicle before injection, with the added convenience of being bacteriostatic.

Each milliliter of this isotonic sodium chloride solution contains 9 mg of sodium chloride and 0.9% benzyl alcohol, functioning as a bacteriostatic preservative.
