Description
Apraclonidine 0.5% Ophthalmic Solution 5mL is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist used primarily for the reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The active ingredient, apraclonidine, works by stimulating alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the eye, leading to a decrease in the production of aqueous humor and an increase in its outflow.
Apraclonidine 0.5% is typically prescribed for short-term use, particularly for the management of IOP following ocular surgery or in the treatment of acute glaucoma attacks. It is used adjunctively with other antiglaucoma medications when additional reduction in IOP is required. The solution is generally well-tolerated, with an onset of action occurring within hours of administration.
The recommended dosage involves applying one drop of the solution to the affected eye(s) up to three times daily, depending on the severity of the condition. Patients should follow prescribed dosing instructions carefully to avoid side effects, such as dry mouth, drowsiness, or eye irritation.
