Description
Albumin 5% 500 mL Infusion is a sterile solution of human albumin prepared from large pools of human venous plasma using the Cohn cold ethanol fractionation process. This 5% solution of albumin in an aqueous diluent is stabilized with sodium caprylate and acetyltryptophan to ensure product integrity. It contains no more than 200 µg/L of aluminum, and its sodium content is approximately 145 mEq/L. T
Albumin, a key transport protein, is oncotically equivalent to normal human plasma and works to expand blood volume by an amount equal to the volume infused. It is primarily used to treat shock resulting from hemorrhage, surgery, trauma, burns, bacteremia, renal failure, and cardiovascular collapse. In certain cases, such as severe jaundice in newborns or acute liver failure, albumin plays a dual role in maintaining plasma oncotic pressure while binding excess bilirubin.
Albumin infusion is contraindicated in patients with congestive cardiac failure, renal insufficiency, or stabilized chronic anemia, as they may be at risk of circulatory overload. Patients with known allergies to albumin should avoid this treatment.
