Description

Chromic gut absorbable sutures are sterile, monofilament surgical sutures composed of purified collagen derived from the serosal layer of bovine intestines. The collagen is treated with chromium salts to delay absorption, providing extended tensile strength in tissue. These sutures are packaged in a preservation solution containing 87% isopropanol, 12% water, and 1% triethanolamine to maintain sterility and material integrity until use.

The 4-0 chromic gut suture features a 30-inch length with a 3/8 circle, 19 mm reverse cutting needle (C-13 code) constructed from Surgalloy. The needle design allows precise tissue penetration and secure placement in soft tissue, reducing trauma and ensuring reliable knot security. The 36-strand suture structure provides uniform handling and maintains structural integrity during procedures.

Upon placement, the suture induces a moderate tissue inflammatory response characteristic of foreign body reaction, followed by gradual enzymatic breakdown of collagen. The chromic treatment prolongs tensile strength compared to plain gut sutures, supporting wound approximation over an extended period. Complete absorption occurs over time, eliminating the need for suture removal.
