Description

Chromic gut absorbable sutures are sterile, monofilament surgical sutures composed of purified collagen treated with chromium salts to delay absorption and prolong tensile strength. The sutures are packaged in a preservation solution containing 87% isopropanol, 12% water, and 1% triethanolamine, maintaining sterility and structural integrity until use. These undyed, uncoated sutures provide predictable handling, knot security, and reliable performance during soft tissue approximation and ligation.

The 3-0 chromic gut suture features an 18-inch length with a 3/8 circle, 19 mm reverse cutting needle (C-13 code) constructed from Surgalloy. The needle design allows precise tissue penetration and secure placement, reducing tissue trauma and facilitating consistent suturing. The 36-strand suture structure ensures uniform handling and stability during surgical procedures.

When placed in tissue, chromic gut sutures induce a moderate inflammatory response characteristic of the foreign body reaction. The enzymatic breakdown gradually reduces tensile strength and dissolves the suture over time. The chromic treatment extends the period of tissue support compared to plain gut sutures, making them suitable for procedures requiring moderate-term wound support.
